Coal Tar Epoxy (DFR 388 / DFH 488) is a two-part, medium-viscosity, solvent-free coal tar epoxy coating designed to provide strong protection against chemicals and water. It is intended for applications where durable, cost-effective waterproofing and chemical resistance are required, including effluent treatment plants, chemical handling zones and terraces.

The coating provides excellent adhesion to steel and properly prepared concrete surfaces, good flexibility to withstand structural movement and thermal changes, strong mechanical properties for durability and impact resistance, high chemical resistance and effective corrosion resistance.

Advantages

  • Excellent adhesion to steel and properly prepared concrete surfaces.
  • Good flexibility to withstand structural movement and thermal changes.
  • Strong mechanical properties.
  • Good durability and impact resistance.
  • High chemical resistance.
  • Suitable for harsh industrial environments.
  • Effective corrosion resistance.
  • Balanced pot life and curing time for ease of application and project turnaround.
  • Solvent-free system.

Application

Coal Tar Epoxy is suitable for:

  • Concrete protection
  • Mild steel protection
  • Bridges
  • Industrial equipment
  • Swimming pools
  • Ships
  • Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs)
  • Petrochemical industries
  • Pharmaceutical industries
  • Food industries
  • Plastic industries
  • Pesticide industries
  • Heavy inorganic industries
  • Pumping stations
  • Storage silos
  • Pipe coatings
  • Motor vehicle chassis
  • Chemical handling zones
  • Terraces

Application Method

Concrete and mild steel surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned to remove dust, loose particles and contaminants. Sandblasting is recommended for achieving a clean, roughened surface for optimal adhesion. Where sandblasting is not possible, mechanical cleaning using a stiff wire brush or abrasive tools should be carried out.

DFR 388 and DFH 488 should be mixed in a 1:1 ratio by weight (100:100 pbw). The components should be stirred thoroughly for at least 2 minutes until a uniform, smooth and consistent mixture is achieved. The mixture can then be applied using a paintbrush, roller or other suitable mechanical applicator.

Consumption / Coverage

The specified coverage is:

15–18 sq.ft. per litre in two coats

at a total dry film thickness of approximately 200–300 microns.
